OPES PDM Newsletter - June 2006

Cystic Fibrosis and OPES PDM – Continued…

Our meeting at the head office of the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation with Ian McIntosh (Manager, Clinical Programs), Josée Guimond (Director, Medical/Scientific and Community Programs) and John Rudson (Individual contracted to maintain the CF Foundation's national database) was very productive. It was established and agreed upon that a protocol will exist for OPES clients to submit patient reports directly to the CF Foundation. This report will be generated from the data already existing within the clinic's OPES profile. Mr. Rudson has set July 10th, 2006, as the date the CPDR will be ready for the electronic submissions. Clinics at that time running OPES PDM will have the ability to submit securely at their own leisure.

The difference between OPES PDM and the CF Foundation's CPDR is that OPES focuses at the specific patient level that is customized for individual clinic use while the CPDR is a national directory of CF patients with generalized information.

  • Patient Level (OPES PDM)
    • A complete patient profile, logging all applicable data (customized by the clinic) stored electronically.
    • Specific data fields used to track patient care on a clinic-to-clinic basis
      • OPES PDM can use this data to fax, email or print out patient visit reports. This dramatically reduces dictation costs on a monthly basis.
      • Data can be used to compile statistical reports for clinical research. Trends and stats can be quickly obtained and used to alter patient care within the individual clinic.
  • National Level (CPDR)
    • Profiling generic patient data
    • Generalized data collection
      • The data collected on the national level has to be generic and every clinic needs to share the common use of each data field.
      • National trends and stats are compiled that could potentially alter patient care nationally

OPES PDM intends to play a big role by assisting the individual clinics in their tasks of collecting and transferring the generic data to the foundation's CPDR.

  • Submit data directly from OPES PDM to the CPDR
    • No more paper submissions
  • Eliminate the resources and time spent on compiling and submitting patient data
  • Compile data as a report that can be saved and exported
  • OPES PDM would increase the security of data transmission
  • The process would reduce any responsibility or fault from the clinic's administrator
    • Encryption and transmission would be built-in making the process of exporting data as easy as clicking one button.

Clinics that purchase an OPES PDM account will also have the option of pre-loading their profile with the existing patient data if supplied by the foundation.
